Mark Richt’s 23rd-ranked Georgia Bulldogs look to put a disappointing 8-5 season behind them when they kick off their 2010 campaign against the UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns Saturday in Athens.
After averaging more than 10 wins per season the last eight seasons, Richt endured his worst campaign since his first year on the job. As if that wasn’t tough enough to take, he had to deal with eight player arrests this offseason.
Fortunately, the Bulldogs do enter their 2010 campaign with some momentum. They defeated then-No. 7 Georgia Tech in last year’s regular season finale. Then, they destroyed Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl. College football lines makers are confident the Bulldogs will pick up where they left off, listing Georgia as a 28.5-point favorite with the total set at 52 in its season opener.

With Tim Tebow and eight other Florida Gators leaving for the NFL, Georgia believes it can challenge the Gators for the SEC East title. But it won’t be easy with a freshman quarterback.
Aaron Murray will take his first college snap Saturday. In order to ease him in, Georgia anticipated using its running game to carry the load early. However, the running game took a hit with the suspension of Washaun Ealey, who was charged with a hit and run while driving on a suspended license.
Ealey rushed for a team-best 717 yards and added three touchdowns in 2009. The length of his suspension is indefinite. In his absence, Caleb King and Carlton Thomas will be asked to step up. King rushed for 594 yards and seven scores a year ago.
While Murray is inexperienced, his teammates are very confident in his ability to lead. The kid is a hard worker in every facet of the game, from the film room to the weight room.
When the Dawgs look to air it out, Murray will want to take a peek in the direction of talented wide receiver A.J. Green. Green caught 53 passes for 808 yards and six touchdowns last season. I can’t even imagine what he could do playing in a pass-first offense.
Georgia’s biggest problem last season was a defense that ranked No. 10 in the SEC in points allowed. In order to perform better in 2010, the Dawgs are switching to a 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.
The former Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach wants his defense to be on the attack in 2010. One of the guys he’ll be counting on to bring the heat is outside linebacker Justin Houston, who lead the Bulldogs with 7.5 sacks from his defensive end post last season.
Georgia is 38-4 in non-conference play under coach Richt. So ff you like the Bulldogs to take care of another non-conference opponent, and cover the spread in the process, bet Georgia at -28.5 at EnterBet.
UL Lafayette is coming off consecutive 6-6 seasons, and coach Rickey Bustle doesn’t expect his kids to back down from Saturday’s big challenge.
The Ragin’ Cajuns defeated the Big 12′s Kansas State in non-conference play last season, but they were also crushed 55-0 by Nebraska and 31-3 by LSU.
Quarterback Chris Masson returns to run the show after throwing for 2,406 yards and 10 scores last year. He’ll be joined in the backfield by good looking tailback Julian Shankle, but there may not be much running room behind an inexperienced offensive line.
The Cajuns will find the most success moving the football through the air with all-conference tight end Ladarius Green. The big 6’6” target could cause the Bulldogs some problems.
While UL Lafayette has high hopes of pulling off a shocker, it is extremely unlikely, considering the Ragin’ Cajuns have lost 12 in a row to ranked foes.
